ESC-IT: Storage of Secrets
- What People Say
Pre-Room & Customer Service:
Good amount of signage on the storefront…good location (across from Markville Mall)…easy to find parking….we’re off to a good start here folks!
This was the second half of my back-to back escape experience right after Bedroom Nightmare. I’ll skip writing the same things here except to once again highlight how I was impressed with ESC-IT’s new and improved lobby, and disappointed with the lack of enthusiasm in presenting the backstory.
How did Storage Of Secrets differ from Bedroom Nightmare? Well, we were a bit hesitant to try it because our group’s success rate at ESC-IT was pretty bad (batting 0 for 3 at that point), and to be told it’s their most difficult room! Yikes! But being suckers for punishment we tried it anyways…
Though I often tell people ESC-IT is pretty much like any other escape room company out there, I do like to emphasize one of their strengths – great theming! I’ve yet to find a room where they don’t make you feel as if you were in the actual environment. Storage Of Secrets was no exception! Not only did we feel like we were in a storage-maintenance room, even the temperature was colder as a result of the concrete walls…impressive to say the least! Cold, dark, musty, and filled mostly with things you’d expect to see. A couple exceptions of course, but for the most part, this was a good start!
There’s one particular twist to this room we very much enjoyed but to avoid spoilers I won’t bother listing it and hope you experience it for yourself.
Having experienced a bit of disappointment with the puzzles in Bedroom Nightmare earlier in the evening, would the same thing happen in Storage Of Secrets?
Not at all! There are times when the puzzles just seem to perfectly match the talents of your group and this was one of those times! We found the puzzles to be a good mix of deduction, searching, logic and physical manipulation. The perfect blend of how our group enjoys interacting with puzzles and with each other! There were no large leaps in logic required, and again the puzzles didn’t restrict us to solitary involvement but rather encouraged us to both spread out and to group think our way through.
So what keeps this room from getting a higher score for puzzles? Malfunctioning equipment comes back to haunt ESC-IT! We were given a faulty (weak) black light which held us back and forced us to complete the room using a clue. Even though our group found this room easier than the others, we’ve noticed one disturbing trend at ESC-IT… The staff need to check the battery levels on all their flashlights and black lights before entering the room! They were nice enough to ”credit” us the one clue, but to be pulled out of our momentum so they could apologize and replace the faulty equipment while showing us what we missed as a result, somewhat ruined the good feelings we had. The little things matter!
We escaped, at the buzzer but again the feeling was a bit hollow after being shown the answer to something we would have solved if only the puzzle didn’t require a fully bright black light.
So what can I say about Storage Of Secrets? It’s not an entry level room for sure, but if you’re a seasoned group of escape room addicts who enjoy a variety of puzzle types within the same room (and minimal locked boxes!) then this is for you! In my opinion probably the best ESC-IT has to offer to seasoned players.
Just make sure you politely ask the staff to speak clearly during the backstory presentation and to check ALL of their equipment so you don’t get pulled away from the experience!
Enjoy your escape!
