I’ll start out this review by giving a huge thumbs up to The Crux for their giant unmistakable signage. I have yet to see a larger one in person; even with my coke bottle glasses off I can see it clear as day. Anyways, back on track here, it was a good first impression. Walking through the door you see a fairly ordinary board game area. Nothing super fancy, but a nice touch with coloured locks for the lockers, a giant Jenga set to play with, and a chance to win a free room. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the owners are very laid back, down-to-earth types.

We get our run down of Aunt Edna’s Condo with some cute tongue in cheek jokes. The entrance to the condo however could definitely use some more “immersion” aspects instead of a sign taped on the door, taking a cue from The Crux’s other room which is beautifully decorated outside. Once inside we are met with very iconic “grandma” type items, although this is supposed to be our aunt’s place. The one obvious out of place item would be the (much disliked and technically “broken”) arrow puzzle. The puzzle’s most redeeming quality is the candy, but I can’t say more without spoilers. The puzzles were entertaining and all except the arrows fit nicely into the game. The owners are looking at removing the arrow puzzle, so that makes me happy.

We are told about Aunt Edna’s concerns from the lovely lady herself, on old school VHS, which is a nice touch to the immersion part. We start by being led through some nostalgia that seems a little more fit for someone in their 40’s than their 60’s, but it was a lot of fun to reminisce. The soundtrack however was insanely delightful! Try your best to not get too distracted singing and dancing, and remember that like most escape rooms, someone is always watching you.

The room came together very well, meaning everything flowed and had its place. We had our doubts as one of us left the room to see if we were correct but of course, we were. From start to finish I very much enjoyed the experience; it was a lot more than I expected since it was just one little room. If you have a group of 4-5 friends who love the 80s THIS is the room for you and although on first look it doesn’t seem that way, it really is a trip down memory lane. You can have a blast even if you don’t escape, simply thanks to the soundtrack.

Final Verdict:

7.3/10
