Over the last few years we have seen a surge of Krampus, the anti-Santa, emerge into our popular culture. There’s something intriguing about the results of being a little naughty and a little nice, and reflecting on our own state of being at the end of the year. Now fans can get their spooky cheer satiated in Countdown Live Escape Game’s Krampus Room. ‘Tis the season to enter one of Downtown LA’s best holiday-themed horror rooms!

Located in Los Angeles off the 110, near south central and USC, is Countdown Live Escape Games. Just as Krampus has been creeping up in the past few years so have the many things to see, eat, and do in this area. Because it’s always a task looking for parking in LA, fortunately they do have a parking lot… if you see a dozen speed bumps clumped together that you have to hurdle, you are in the right place. In the lobby hung decorations of holiday cheer… not fear… which made it very welcoming and inviting. Holiday spirit was abundant as they not only took a group photo of us at the end of the game holding silly signs and photo booth props, but they gave away beautifully wrapped gifts for their 12 Days of Christmas event. This truly showed us how generous this company is, and the relationship they have with their community.

On to the room itself. The set was that of a dark Christmas, like an abandoned house of a serial killer. The room and props were very sturdy, well-made, and executed flawlessly. The props sufficiently matched the creepy Christmas theme. Be careful when opening your presents! There were nice hints of all things sugar and spice. The music, lighting, sound effects, puzzles, and story itself all blended together nicely like a warm holiday chai. For those escape lovers that value story-telling in a room, you’ll find yourself warm with delight… or fright… as the room tells a cohesive story from start to finish. The puzzles were of medium difficulty (be warned of a few red herrings!) and paid tribute to the seasonal, yet dark (actual and metaphorically-speaking) theme of the room.

Although Krampus is very fun to do in the fall/winter, ‘tis always the season for some fun, and this room offers that up and a whole lot more. Discover which list you will be on this year. You have all year to find out!

Final Verdict:

7.4/10
