I should never be surprised by the growth of the escape room business, but when I found out that there was an escape room opening in the “frozen tundra” of Wisconsin (Eagle River to be exact), I was shocked, excited and a little skeptical. When I drove past the building, I was even more concerned. Yet, when my team played the room, I was all smiles.

I always appreciate when an owner chooses a theme that fits the locale, so my team decided to do the room that was fully Northwoods Escape Room’s own creation and inspired by local history. The current facility (since they are moving soon) is located in the tourist area of Eagle River, just down the main drag from the shops. (While you’re in town, try the fudge, and if you have kids, the children’s museum! Trust me.)

Eddie’s Moonshine Shack is for groups of 2-6 and had a tremendous video beginning that engaged us in the story. Our gamemaster answered all of our questions and prepared us well for the room. She also watched us closely, and was ready to lend a hand when we needed it.

Although the areas were a bit small, they fit our team well, and were a ton of fun. The puzzles were strong and creative. The room allowed for some great opportunities to explore and try things out for yourself. Overall some props were a little weak, but honestly if the puzzles are strong and the story is explained well, I usually have a ball. Our team left with big smiles.

So if for some strange reason you are headed way up to the Northwoods of Wisconsin, there is no need to worry — your addiction to escape rooms can still fit into your plans. Try Eddie’s Moonshine Shack and you’ll have so much fun, it’ll be illegal.
