Puzzle Workshop is located in a sleepy, nondescript office park, within a stone’s throw of at least three other escape room companies. The owners of Puzzle Workshop all have video game design backgrounds, and it definitely showed in their escape rooms. Scarlet Starlet is a fairly difficult room with a lot of heart, so veterans should love this one.
Players attempt to rescue a kidnapped pop star in this escape room adventure. The puzzles are intricate and well thought out, and the types of puzzles are quite diverse. There are no ‘cop-out’ puzzles (such as a sudoku puzzle in a box that doesn’t fit anywhere) or anything too tedious. A few observational puzzles are actually quite ingenious. I had experienced better, but the production value of the room is okay and the storyline immersive. I really like the fact that, in addition to escaping, the players are also tasked with finding out the identity of the kidnapper and locating the victim. That is three separate tasks and a whole ton of puzzles standing in the way. A few fairly original moments in the game made me smile.
That being said, there was some room for improvement. For example, it was quite uncomfortable and awkward in the room (a close space) without air conditioning or music. I personally think Lady Gaga would go great with the theme… or maybe some Katy Perry? There was also a technical screw-up in our game and the game master had to intrude on the room, but these things happen.
Overall, Scarlet Starlet was a fun room with strong puzzle elements that tied reasonably into the theme of the room. I would recommend this experience to veteran players.
