The Wizard’s Tower is one of four escape rooms at Khronos Gauntlet in Guelph. Located close to other escape room facilities, Khronos is housed in a two-storey space with ample street parking and a variety of dining options in the area. With an adequately sized lobby stocked with games, puzzles, and a TV playing movies (“The Princess Bride” on this day), we were quite comfortable and entertained as we waited to start our first room.
The staff did a great job of going over the rules with demonstrations of locks along with the do’s and don’ts, but the delivery of the backstory, while recited well, could have used a little more flair. We all had to admit, however, that the surprise before entering the room did catch us off guard and our initial impression of the room itself was quite positive. Stepping into the first room felt like we were entering a creepy library with a collection of books and trophies, varying from antique to modern, adorning the shelves and walls. It was clear that a lot of thought was put into the design of the room; unfortunately, the quality was not consistent throughout the rest of the experience and there was not much plot development even though the puzzles and props were generally well themed. It is also important to note that there are some tight spaces so a team of greater than five might find it a bit of a squeeze.
Although we enjoyed looking at all the artifacts, a large portion of our time was spent searching behind, above, below, and generally every inch of every part of the room and it felt like virtually every problem required us to hunt for more clues. Once we had all the pieces most of the puzzles were fairly straightforward, yet some of them were tedious and left many in our group waiting around for others to finish.
As an introduction to escape rooms, or for those who enjoy the searching aspect of them, Wizard’s Tower offers a lot of entertainment value, but it may not be the most interesting experience for those who are looking for a strong story element or a variety of puzzles.
