The team behind Escape Code really knows how to put a good breakout experience together and their Condemned room is no exception. Located in the heart of Branson, Escape Code has a nice store front in a strip mall with plenty of available parking. Once inside the building, there is lots of space and games to play while you wait until your room is ready, with friendly staff members available to answer any questions. They also supply lockable trunks to store belongings in during your time there, which is always nice, so they don’t get in the way in the rooms. Escape Code’s pre-room introduction videos explaining the rules of the game and the story for each room were some of the best we’ve seen. You can also visit their easily navigated website, which features promo videos for each room.
The Condemned room derives its plot from a Bible story where Paul and Silas were sent to a Roman prison. Your group is thrown into prison along with them and it is your goal to find a path to freedom. The layout of the room was fairly interesting and had plenty of space for a larger group. Lots of the props used were in great condition, but we found some of the décor to be low quality. Also, many of the hand-painted ciphers and letters were difficult to read. It would have been nice to have had a little more precision when it came to those details.
The immersive experience of this room was well thought out and you could tell it is a major focus for Escape Code. Since Condemned was set during Biblical times, all of the materials used in the room were of that period. There was very little that felt out of place. Even the ringing of a bell to ask for clues fit into the theme. As with each of their rooms, the sound effects were on point. Our biggest disappointment was the lack of ceiling coverage, which was one of the only things that took us out of the world of the room. Plus, the microphones and cameras could have used some camouflaging.
The innovative use of a very low-tech room in a business that is so technologically savvy was impressive. Each time you progressed within the Condemned room, the story evolved and the way to find solutions changed as well. Everything had a nice flow to it without being too linear, and every clue given was helpful and even had picture aides. While solving the various puzzles, the overall arching goal was always in mind. Some of the game design was simple in nature, so we would have enjoyed a few more puzzles to solve.
Escaping this room was different than a lot of others we have experienced. There wasn’t so much of an urgency to escape and the focus was more on the journey rather than the destination – which isn’t a bad thing! The storytelling really sets this room apart, and you don’t need any outside knowledge of the Bible in order to complete your tasks. We enjoyed working our way through the story of Paul and Silas, especially when the solution for a puzzle would require the talents of the escapees rather than a code or number. We completed this room with four experienced players, but it would be a great room for a larger group or family. It is also very kid-friendly, but know there is darkness at the beginning of the room and some thunder and lightning effects. If you’re looking for a high-quality escape room experience in the Branson area, then you should try the rooms at Escape Code. Their immersive rooms and challenging puzzles are worth the trip.
