We previously reviewed another room from Puzzah! in Broomfield, CO. If you haven’t already done so, check out our write-up of The Curse to get more information about the overall Puzzah! Broomfield experience.

The extremely high quality craftsmanship in Specimen is a shining example of Puzzah!’s goal to provide top-notch adventure rooms. The intensely detailed entry door was just the beginning of the intricate furnishings and sharp colors that awaited us. We were transported into a space craft holding cell filled with a large console, buttons, valves, an escape hatch and more. Unlike The Curse, the pre-recorded messages in Specimen did not begin until we had a chance to take in the scenery and consider our escape plan. The puzzles that followed required the whole group’s attention (and hands!). As your adventure path continues, you will encounter additional scenery that keeps with the theme and the high level of production quality.

We found some of the puzzles to be quite challenging and (more often than we would have liked) we relied on trial-and-error or the messaging system to help us along. At times we became a little frustrated and in those instances it would have been helpful to have some kind of control over the speed of the clues or to have communication with a live person. Because of the way this game is laid out and the start time of the next group of participants we had some instances where we could hear people in another room. This wasn’t terribly distracting, but it did take away from the serene setting that surrounded us. This Puzzah! location has two more rooms in the works; some sound-absorbing material on the walls or floor could be a helpful addition as the business expands.

The combination of stellar room production with high caliber puzzle design makes Specimen an exciting adventure for all ages. This is a great activity for a group of adults or as a family outing. Stretch your brains, have some fun and expect to visit again as new rooms are released.

Final Verdict:

7.8/10
