CluedIn is located in the Chicago suburb of Glen Ellyn. There is ample parking, nearby restaurants and shopping, and is an overall easy-to-find location. Upon entering CluedIn, we were surprised by how upscale the location looks (e.g., big wooden doors, beautiful woodwork, etc.). There were only a couple of places to sit, and some puzzles to play with, but we found that bigger groups would probably be short on room. Brian, the owner, was incredibly personable and outgoing toward his guests, we could tell that he loves what he does!
Asylum starts with a short introduction from the game master, followed by a series of video clips that immerse you into the story. The game master stays in the room with you, in character, but for the most part does not interfere with gameplay. The room itself is somewhat bare, but has signs of what you might see in a hospital setting. We were hoping for more elements of what we picture when we think “asylum” but we still felt immersed thanks to the surprise about halfway into the room.
The puzzles were varied in difficulty and type, but did involve a fair amount of reading. For us, we felt that the puzzles could have been more challenging, but it would be great for someone who hasn’t done many rooms. We loved how some of the puzzles really tied into the “asylum” theme and had such creative uses.
Overall, we did have fun in the asylum room. We thought it was logical and easy-to-follow, but the room itself could use some sprucing up to make it fit the theme a little better. This would be a great room for a beginner-escaper and for smaller groups, but larger groups or more experienced players might be looking for more of a challenge.
