- What People Say
The West Nyack 5-Wits was similar to our other visits in Upstate New York — fabulous atmosphere, incredible set design and friendly staff. And, like the other locations, we found ourselves scanning the information map of an indoor shopping mall to find the storefront on the 4th floor (near Target in the space previously occupied by the IMAX theater). There wasn’t any outdoor signage to suggest where to park and the Palisades Center is massive. If you are time constrained, then make sure to account for parking and navigating.
Broadly speaking our visit was excellent. The set design and game flow were about as good as you can get in an escape/adventure room experience. Our biggest complaint continues to be the lobby. It was in excellent condition with those iconic gateways, swag for sale and large screens that announced recent game scores. However, there wasn’t anywhere to sit unless you venture out of the lobby into the main mall area.
In Deep Space you’ll be moving around, searching for buttons, testing your reflexes and challenging your mind. Our team included guest judges aged 6 and 9 who loved all of the physical interactions. “This is really cool!” was shouted a number of times throughout the adventure. The adults also had a great time, however some of the puzzles were confusing and a lot of help was needed to get started. The games at 5-Wits were all fully automated which
meant that the system adapted to our progress and provided hints and suggestions based on our pace. We wished some of the hints came sooner (and were more targeted to our mistakes) because tensions started to build when we thought we completed the tasks, but we were in fact incorrect in our methods.
From the company’s website: “While each of our family friendly adventures is designed to be intense, they are intended to thrill and challenge, not to frighten you. There are some moments of temporary darkness and some loud sound effects in each experience, so we suggest that parents of young children, generally below the age of 7, should use their discretion.” Our group included a teammate who is fearful of confined spaces and had never played an escape/adventure room because of her claustrophobia. 5-Wits thought of this during construction and they had a discreet door within each area of Deep Space to allow people to step out if they feel uncomfortable. Our teammate had as good of a time as she could have expected considering the circumstances. The rest of the team was happy that she was able to join in the fun!
5-Wits West Nyack has 3 different adventures, each with their own style of play. Some may find the cost of a single room to be rather expensive for 30-40 minutes of activity, so we suggest going with a 2- or 3-play pass to get a taste of it all. This works out to about the same price as a movie with popcorn and you’ll leave with a much bigger smile on your face!
