City 13 is located in the suburbs of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The location was easy to find and had plenty of parking available for guests. The building that City 13 is in is beautiful, and we could tell right away this wouldn’t have the “office building” feel that many escape rooms have. A spacious lobby, and extremely pleasant employees, greeted us as we entered. There were several couches, a pool table, several tables with chairs, a popcorn machine (free!), coffee maker (free!), and drinks for purchase. Additionally, they had merchandise for purchase. We were already impressed! The owner(s) explained to us that when they picked this location, they did so with the forethought of not wanting an office building feel but wanted to create an alternate reality where the entire time you are in City 13, it is an authentic experience. We were walked into our entry point to the city, briefed on our mission (in the absolute coolest briefing we’ve seen so far), and then walked through the streets of the city to the Cyber Station.
We want to start with set design and quality, and one of our players summed it up well by saying “if there was such a thing as a cyber station, this is what it would look like.” Immediately upon walking into the cyber station, the quality was authentic and impeccable. We saw everything we would expect to see in a cyber station, which contributed immensely to our immersion into the story. The tech in this room worked flawlessly, the sound effects added to the reality of the story, and throughout the room there was feedback, so we knew whether we got something or had to try again.
This was our favorite of City 13’s rooms, and one of the reasons was the puzzle flow. First of all, there was a puzzle in here that we’ve never seen before, which rarely happens, and was quite a delight for us! The technology behind some of the puzzles was outstanding, the story and flow of our mission was understandable, and the puzzles were on-theme. We loved the Easter egg in this room (apparently, we are only the second group to have noticed this). Additionally, we loved that there was a common puzzle throughout the rooms that really ties together the overarching City 13 theme.
This room was amazing! If you are visiting Milwaukee and must choose just one room, we would highly recommend City 13’s Cyber Station. We were laughing, dancing, and running around through this room, all the while staying in the story and trying to accomplish our mission. This room would be great for anyone, but make sure you bring at least a few friends—it definitely requires some teamwork!
