“Where is the treasure buried?” is the question that is posed to you as you search through this room from 8D Room Escape just outside of Boston. With ample garage parking close by (it was free the weekend we were there) and a large eye-catching sign, 8D’s location was very convenient and easy to find, especially since it was right next door to Boda Borg. We were impressed with the variety of board games for escapers to try out as well as the assortment and drinks available for purchase in their welcoming and comfortable lobby, and just as hospitable were the staff that quickly got us through the registration process.

As with Mission: Z, The Half Treasure Map started off with an entertaining verbal intro before we were led into the room. The pirate theme here was done somewhat inconsistently with some elements that made us feel like we were on a ship or hunting for treasure, while others would either pull us back into the present or just have us scratching our heads. What it did do well was progress the story through the settings and it was always apparent where we were, even when some of the puzzles seemed to belong to a different room.

As for the puzzles themselves, there were a lot of them with a good variety and most were quite simple yet logical with no leaps in logic. We generally found them to be engaging and were impressed with some that required quite a few steps, but at times some members of our group had less to do and we felt that the room is therefore ideal with a group of around five people. The puzzles also utilized tech that sometimes added to the experience, yet at other times we felt that the tech needed to be integrated into the theme a bit more. The room was very much a case of “this was great… but this could have used a bit more”.

Overall The Half Treasure Map offers a fun and cerebral escape that is geared towards beginners who want to solve a lot of puzzles and don’t require much in terms of story or immersion. If you want a change of pace from working up a sweat at Boda Borg or you want to work on a lot of puzzles, take some time to try to find the treasure at 8D Room Escape.
