Breakout KC delivers another stellar room design with The Raid! Try to find and launch the cure for humanity before Big Pharma arrives with the help of a live actor (a first for Breakout KC). Our team of experienced escapers were so impressed with the new ideas, puzzles, props and, most of all, the story!

If this will be your first visit to Breakout KC’s River Market location, we highly suggest you trust your GPS in finding the entrance. Arriving from the west, there is very little in way of signage as the entrance is in the back corner of a parking lot. Speaking of parking, River Market is notorious for its lack of parking so be sure to plan to arrive with extra time before your booking.

Breakout’s lobby space is on the smaller side with limited seating, but the excellent staff are very good at handling multiple groups at a time. Every experience our team has had with the Breakout staff has consistently been fantastic and this visit was no exception. We checked in, signed our waivers, and were taken to the basement to start our adventure! Qur game master was energetic and knowledgeable, talking us through the standard room rules and instructions.

So, in we go into an “elevator” to watch our opening video (don’t worry my claustrophobic friends, we had six in our group and it was open enough to move around freely). Our introduction video was very well produced and edited. It was a great start of what we came to realize was a fully story driven escape room experience!

There are so many features and puzzles in the room I would love to rave about, but I won’t ruin anything for you. You must experience it for yourself.

The game space was surprisingly large with a series of rooms to access and explore. The technological aspects of the room were impressive but not overused. The props for the most part were solid with just a little wear and tear as one would expect.

The highlight of The Raid was its immersive story-driven experience. Many seasoned escape room enthusiasts know that for some rooms, you’re given a scenario at the start of the room but your assigned “motivation” is quickly forgotten, and you get straight into just solving the puzzles. The great thing about this room is, through room design, lighting, sound effects, and live actor, you are given a constant sense of urgency to work as fast as you can to find the cure. Our live actor deserves a special shout out for their dedication and talent! Our team consists of several seasoned (and talented) actors and we have high standards for performance. Breakout did not disappoint!

When it comes to puzzle design, we were mostly all felt fully engaged. As the story progresses, linear puzzles make way for multiple teams to split up and solve things independently. The one thing that stood out right away was the absolute necessity of teamwork and communication! There are several parts of the room that need multiple people in multiple places shouting at each other from across the room. Personally, nothing takes my drive and energy away faster than just one person trying to solve a puzzle while everyone else just looks over their shoulder. This does not happen in The Raid. Another thing we noticed as we were discussing our experience was the uniqueness of the puzzle solutions. This was not one of those rooms that was just finding four-digit code after four-digit code over and over. There was a refreshing selection of different puzzles and different solutions.

This was one of those rooms where you are filled with joy as soon as you escape the room! Breakout KC has always given our team a fun challenge and this room certainly makes the list. While this ERA team highly recommends this room, a few caveats. This room, while we wouldn’t categorize as “horror” or “scary”, has some intense moments (in the best way). We agree with the website when they recommend this room for ages 10 or higher. Smaller kids might be overwhelmed with some of the more theatrical elements.

Also, as stated before, this is Breakout KC’s first room to incorporate a live actor. If you haven’t done a room with a live actor, it really adds to the entire experience. They are not meant to scare or distract but they serve as both a resource for puzzle solving and a source of immersion into the story. Breakout KC’s website has a great FAQ section should you have questions.

We recommend this room to intermediate and experienced players with a team of 4 to 6. Beginners can certainly give this room a shot, but we think it’s best if you know the basics of escape rooms before attempting.

Try the Raid! Launch the cure! Save humanity!
Drinks are for Winners!
