RiddleBox is located in the Chicagoland suburb of Naperville, Illinois.  The location was easy to find, had plenty of parking, and was located a short drive from several restaurants.  Additionally, there was a bakery a few doors down in the same area for a quick bite to eat or a coffee before the room.  They do state this on their website, however, we would like to state it again, this is not an ADA accessible room—it is on the second floor and there is no elevator.  The owner greeted us to open the escape room for us, and we were hopeful to get started! The lobby was big with plenty of seating, there was a closet with a coat rack for our belongings, some puzzles and games to play with, and a clean bathroom.  We were given the backstory of the room—we were poisoned in the tavern and had to find the antidote within the hour.  Because we were poisoned, we didn’t waste any time before getting started on our search!

The room was dimly lit and had a soundtrack playing that fit the sounds of what you’d expect in a tavern, which helped us to feel the theme.  We noted that the bar area, table, chests, etc. were all made quite well and looked like what we’d imagine in a medieval tavern (we later found out these were made by the owner for the room, rather than being purchased—we loved it).  There were several physical locks in the room, but they were mostly on places we understood being “locked.”  There were also a few puzzles using mechanics other than locks, which we appreciated, and we think newer players will love.  There was little to no wear and tear in this room, and the quality of the pieces were great.  We would love to see even more tech used in future rooms, which we think would really boost the immersion factor.

We loved that all of the puzzles were logical and could be solved with information from the room—there were a couple of times that we figured out what to do, and later found a tool or another hint that would have given a few extra breadcrumbs.  The puzzles seemed well thought out and did have variety in terms of type and difficulty level.  In terms of puzzles, however, we again would have loved to see more technology used.

Was it fun? Yes!  This was a fun room with great set design and quality.  We think that newer players especially would love this room and the elements of non-physical lock puzzles.  We also think smaller groups would love this room, due to the amount of space in the room. Overall, this was a fun time and we recommend checking out RiddleBox if you’re in the area.

Final Verdict:

7/10
