Picture this! You’re a puzzle fanatic! You live for them! You look forward to completing the daily puzzles in the newspaper and none have been a match for you so far… You long for the day in which you find a puzzle that is so difficult, it even stumps you. One day, you see an ad in the paper calling on the most brilliant minds to accept this challenge and pass the test! Solve it, and it just might lead to something greater than you could ever imagine… fail and be left wondering what could have been.

Sounds intriguing right? While this is highly unlikely to occur and seems like it came straight out of a movie, the team at Ruze Escape Rooms has turned this scenario into somewhat of a reality! Ruze Escape Rooms is an actual escape room company that is located in Burlington Ontario. While they’ve produced exciting in person rooms, Brimstone is their first at home puzzle adventure. The game itself consists of 11 postcards encased in three envelopes which make the game a great option to play on the go or while on vacation. The postcards are made of a nice cardstock material and contain fairly standard graphics. Additionally to the physical components, you will need access to a mobile device and possibly a computer as there is a technical aspect to the game. The videos and technical aspects that accompany the game are really well done and add another layer to the game.

The immersion of at home escape room games is often the most difficult category to gauge and Brimstone was no exception to that. While the story started off extremely strong, it waned increasingly as the game progressed. Our team would have loved to see more of a story develop in between puzzles as you are given your next direction. While we will touch more on it later, the puzzles were definitely a good source of immersion as they fit the overall theme quite well. Ultimately, Brimstone had a very cool setup that set the tone for the rest of the game.

The one area at which Brimstone really shone amongst our group was the puzzles! The game consists of around 10-12 puzzles all of varying types and difficulties which is great for both newer players and seasoned enthusiasts. The puzzles were thematically correct and leant to the overall immersion of the game. We did however find ourselves quite frustrated a couple times throughout. Overall the puzzles were certainly the brightest spot of the game. We liked how it all formed into a meta-puzzle of sorts and how other people in our group were able be working on a different puzzle at the same time.

So overall, was Brimstone fun? Yes, the game is certainly enjoyable. Puzzle enthusiasts should enjoy the amount of puzzles, as well as the variety that is offered but those looking for a story-driven, immersive experience might be better off skipping this game. If you check Brimstone out, we would recommend playing it as a group as the puzzles may become too tricky or monotonous for one person. We would also recommend using multiple phones or devices as you will need to switch screens quite often throughout the game. Played Brimstone?
