At Roundabout, you can see they take immersion seriously. Butcher’s Basement definitely takes horror to a whole new level, but I’ll write more about that in a minute. First, it’s important to note Roundabout isn’t the easiest place to find, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled or you may just miss the narrow stairway leading off Yonge St. Once inside we felt pretty cramped in the lobby area, but the staff were attentive and friendly which always makes up for most things.

Dr. Who fans will probably appreciate how Butcher’s Basement is somehow bigger on the inside than the outside which was a surprise. The puzzles were on the weaker end and had some leaps in logic and/or required some specific knowledge that some people wouldn’t know. Most of this was somewhat masked by the strong immersive feeling of being trapped in a real butcher’s basement. The components and props were fairly high quality which helped. Our biggest disappointment was the staff forgetting to do a full reset from the previous players. This lead to a puzzle being found finished, a lock being found open, and two keys being found in the open instead of in their hiding places. A real shame, but we were somewhat sympathetic towards the staff who was new and the owner’s response was apologetic and polite. All that aside, whom would we recommend this room to? Mostly those who don’t really care about puzzle quality but rather those who are looking for a good immersive experience in a creepy room with a good story. We truly felt immersed despite our disappointment with the puzzle quality and poor reset. Butcher’s Basement doesn’t make my list of top rooms, but I wouldn’t say it was bad either.

As always, happy escaping!

Final Verdict:

7.3/10

I thought this was a good difficulty level for a beginner room. Good mix of puzzles. We got out without needing to complete 2 of the locks with 12 minutes to spare (it IS beginner rated). Great set design, as per usual with Roundabout.
