Whether you are driving by or headed right for it, Oshawa Escape Rooms is very hard to miss. The building is decorated with large, clear signage, and finding parking is not an issue (nor is finding the correct door to enter the building). The lobby, painted purple, is a good size, though seating could be an issue for a large group that arrives early for their escape room experience. If you do happen to get a seat, the staff have movies playing to entertain you, as well as a tabletop Ms. Pac-Man arcade machine boasting 60 classic titles. The staff themselves are welcoming and friendly, and enjoy a chat about your escape room experiences. Before entering a room, escapees are provided a story, which we felt needed to be more engaging, though we discovered later that the stories for all of this company’s rooms are being reworked in the near future.

Upon stepping into Detention, I truly felt that I was back at school. The classroom set was well developed, and even included one this former student’s fondest school memories: a television cart, complete with HUGE television and VHS player. The construction work in the room is solid, and the placement of set pieces and props adds to the quality of the room. There is no wiring or incomplete construction to detract from the experience, though we did encounter one issue with the placement of the timer clock plug. There was one part of the room that we found visually startling, and while our group couldn’t agree on what we thought would have improved that area, we did agree that it was lacking.  

The Immersion factor in this room is executed brilliantly. Along with the thematic set design, the puzzles involved pieces that you would expect to see in a classroom. The story, while brief and simple to start, slowly develops into something much more engaging and enjoyable. A lot of this development occurs towards the end of the experience, however, so we would have liked to see some more connection to the story in some of the earlier puzzles. We also found the room got quite warm, which was also very reminiscent of classrooms we had all experienced in our childhoods. One thing to note is that after the development of the story, you are left wanting more, which is a rarity when it comes to escape room plots.

The first thing to note about the puzzles of Detention is that there are a LOT of them. Make sure that you bring a decent-sized group when attempting this escape room, otherwise you may find yourself strapped for time. Amazingly, even with the amount of puzzles this room has to offer, each puzzle is unique, with very little semblance to the others. You will note a number of 5-character combination locks, though we didn’t find it confusing as to which one we were supposed to be using at any given time. The puzzles are also thematic, many dealing with school in one way or another, and they are of varying levels of difficulty.

I cannot remember the last time I had so much fun in a classroom! While it took our group some time to really get rolling, we all quite enjoyed ourselves while progressing through Detention. This room is a solid choice for a larger group of investigators, and while there wasn’t a standalone “wow factor” in the room, it is a very enjoyable experience. As a final note, I would be remiss if I did not hint at the secret of Oshawa Escape Rooms. If you find yourself visiting this company, I sincerely suggest playing more than one of their rooms; mystery and surprise await beyond every door.
