Sometimes you go through a room and you come out thinking “That would have been amazing had it not been for…” The Collector was an experience that had us loving some parts, but a few questionable puzzles and a lack of a storyline held it back from being a truly great escape.

As this was the second room we were doing at Adventure Rooms Niagara, we already knew that we would not be provided with any backstory or explanation as to what we were doing in the room. This is a shame as right from the start, and throughout the entire adventure, you’re almost forced to create a plot in your head as it feels like the designers had some sort of narrative they were following. Because of this, it went from being a possibly harrowing escape to a romp through very well themed and decorated rooms.

The most impressive part of the rooms were the rooms themselves. With high quality set pieces all around and believable furniture and equipment as well as realistic artifacts every step of the way, Adventure Rooms has created a very consistently themed environment that makes you feel like you’ve been transported to a different (undisclosed) location.

As for the puzzles, things started off smoothly due to the inclusive design with multiple puzzles that can be solved simultaneously, leaving us each working individually. Things became more linear after that and we had to use our combined wits to get through a few tough ones. With a good variety of puzzles and interesting use of tech, things were looking up. Unfortunately, we felt that a few visual glitches near the end prevented us from getting through some of the tasks which soured us on the whole experience. (They did however correct one of the puzzles and sent us a picture of the fix).

Overall it was a room that had a lot going for it, but was just short of being one that we loved. Adding a story would make it much more immersive and altering some of the puzzles would make the room a lot less frustrating. Was it fun? Our group was split, but I did enjoy it for the most part and would recommend it for its impressive sets and generally good puzzles.

Final Verdict:

7.2/10
