Escape Reality is located in the city of Chicago with relatively easy parking through Spot Hero or parking garages. There is great signage, and you can look for heads in the window, you’ll find it! The staff here were very welcoming and friendly, and made us feel quite comfortable. There were plenty of tables, chairs, and games to play, as well as a variety of refreshments available. There was music playing in the briefing room, which made us feel immersed instantly, and the pre-room speech was personalized based on the group playing, we loved that! We were explained the different locks and how to use the clue system (tablet), we were also told that if we used this clue system it would take 5 minutes off our time. We had only seen this type of clue system in one other escape room, it’s not our favorite. We were also told that if didn’t want to use the tablet clue system we could ask the GM to come in the room to help us. We didn’t use either of these tools during this room experience.
Upon entering the room, we saw plenty of authentic props with the likeness of A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones). As big fans of the books/show as well as “medieval”-themed rooms, we couldn’t wait to start. There were several puzzles that could be worked on all at once, which would be good for a bigger group, or for groups that are more experienced. The way the room and puzzles were set up allowed for immersion, however the middle section of the room could use a couple more locks to add a bit more of a challenge. While the look of the room was interesting at first, the puzzles were slightly anti-climactic.
The puzzles themselves were not the most challenging, but took teamwork and cooperation and kept to the theme of the room well. Some props were not used for puzzles, but adding them in could add some difficulty. But we do like how they add to the ambiance of the room.
Did we have fun? Yes! We really enjoyed working together to solve the puzzles and move through this room. We felt like it stuck to the theme well, and allowed us to really feel part of the story. True enthusiasts of Game of Thrones will highly enjoy this room; one of our members had a great time dressing up in one of the props. Overall, we had a great time playing and would recommend this room to new players and fans of the books and show it is themed after.
