Escape Room Races is located in downtown Chicago. We met the owner, Lauren, at a park downtown, where she greeted us with hand-warmers due to the unusually cold weather, which was such a sweet gesture! Being downtown Chicago, there are plenty of nearby restaurants, shops, ice cream parlors, and other attractions for once you finish the race. After arriving and introducing ourselves, we were briefed on the alien-themed backstory of the mission.

The room itself was downtown Chicago, but we also had a wooden box with several materials to get us where we needed to go, provide us with puzzles and clues that we needed along the way, and help us to complete the room. We wished we could have had a bag or somewhere to put the box because it was cumbersome to run with, but we made it work! All of the materials in the box were high-quality and fit the theme relatively well. The puzzles also did a great job of incorporating Chicago into them.

We all felt quite immersed in the “race” aspect of the game, but found ourselves wishing the theme was a bit stronger throughout. We also realized that because there was a race/run happening in Chicago, the streets were blocked off from cars, so we could easily cross streets without having to wait—this would be an added time factor if there aren’t events happening when your team goes. Also keep in mind that if you need a clue you have to run back to home base to speak to the game master, make sure and have your running shoes on!

We had an amazing time doing the room escape race, we loved it! We wished that the theme could have been more present, or more linked to Chicago history, but we had a great time nonetheless. We also think this would be a great way for tourists to get to see some of what the city has to offer, without necessarily spending much time at each place. We definitely recommend this experience to tourists, Chicagoans, and everyone in-between. It should also be noted that Room Escape Races does mostly corporate events with hundreds of individuals, but is also able to take groups as small at 4 vs. 4. Overall, this was a great experience.
