A little ways up North in Newmarket, Crypto makes its home on the second floor of a building just off of highway 404. Recent renovations have expanded their space considerably and there is ample room to kick back and relax before your game, and although there is a lack of games or some form of entertainment while you wait, you can pass the time talking to the extremely friendly staff.
The Infiltration is the second room that Crypto has released, and just like their other rooms, it will impress you the moment you step in with its outstanding sets. The room starts off with a movie-quality video that goes over the rules and backstory and then your 60 minutes (or less) begins! The setting is the 1950’s and you are a team of spies trying to infiltrate a lab to destroy a weapon before it can be unleashed upon the world. The surroundings make you feel like you’re in an old spy movie and the story is revealed to you as you progress, keeping you immersed in the plot as you work through problems.
The strength of Crypto is the use of reliable and robust tech in their puzzles. By reducing the number of locks, the puzzles seem fresh and are designed to fit into the story, helping to maintain the theme of the room. While the quality and variety of the challenges were great, the room is quite linear and thus there are times when not everyone was involved, but we felt like this would be good for beginner or intermediate escapers as it also means the objectives are well defined.
Overall the rooms is an excellent example of how a room can utilize technology intelligently and in a way that does not seem forced or contrived, adding to the experience and not distracting escapers from the story. With good immersion and clever puzzles, Infiltration is definitely worth the drive up to Newmarket.
