Brain Drain is located in a beautiful building in downtown Chicago, Illinois, next to plenty of shops, restaurants, and parking garages. The location was easy to find, but larger signs outside could be beneficial for those who don’t know the city as well. Walking into this lobby, we were so excited. The benches/seats were comfortable, and handmade! They had games, dress-up clothes and accessories, an area to lock your coat/belongings, and very friendly employees. In addition, they have a large chalk-wall to write a message and leave your mark at Brain Drain. We were so excited to get started.
We began our room by putting on straitjackets and trying a new test “drug.” We entered the room and our game master gave us our back story and helped us to feel immersed in the room. Contrary to the other room that we did, this room was quite decorated. There were various colors, shapes, and items to get acclimated to. We explored separately at first, and began working together quite quickly. As we moved through the room, we were consistently excited about what was coming next. Two of our members love more physical rooms that require searching, moving around, and exploring—these two members found this room to be especially fun. There were a variety of puzzles, ranging in difficulty, but many of them required teamwork and communication.
This room made sense and followed a logical sequence, while at the same time having a topsy-turvy, think-outside-the-box feel to it. They do treat this room (which is brand new) as longer than one hour, however, we were able to work through the room within an hour. We felt nostalgic in this room, even if it wasn’t themed from our time growing up. This room is unlike others that we’ve seen, and it hits the nail on the head in terms of theme, puzzles, set design, and excitement. There was one puzzle we had trouble understanding it’s connection to the rest of the flow, but it was not enough to wreck our experience or momentum through the room.
Was it fun? Yes! This room made us feel like kids again. We were giddy, giggly, and had an amazing time exploring the room and seeing new and exciting features throughout. This room would be great for those who enjoy a great set design, intermediate (and experienced) players, groups with younger members, and those willing to think outside the box and have a great time.
