This was our second room of the day at Escape Room Center. Check out our review of Lucky Duck Speakeasy to get more information about this location. Our pre-room experience was very similar to Lucky Duck Speakeasy.

We visited just a few weeks after Escape Room Center opened so the quality of the Blackbeard’s Brig was excellent. The set and materials felt strong and sturdy and we expect that the condition of the room will hold up for awhile to come. We did experience one panel with a flimsy cloth covering up some internal wiring and a battery for one of the puzzles started to die as we were using it. These small flaws had little affect on our gameplay. This was a great looking room with plenty of pirate flair.

While we were more than satisfied with the quality of the room materials, we were less so with the immersion into the story. At first glance, the wrought-iron gate, pirate-y props and wall designs made us feel like we could be at sea. However, as we played on we noted that the thematic elements reflected rather than immersed us into the storyline. There wasn’t much progression in the narrative and many of the puzzles didn’t fit the story or the intended scene. There were some really great props throughout the game and an amazing puzzle at the end, so there was plenty to keep us engaged with the theme.

There was a nice variety of puzzles that ranged in difficulty and tested both our minds and our fingers. We were a small group so there was plenty to keep us busy; players within a group of 6+ people might have some downtime. There were some unique puzzle solutions that made good use of the themed props, but also some puzzles that felt disjointed from the flow. We would have preferred fewer combo locks and more “pirate-like” levers and locks.

We found the ending a bit anti-climatic so our initial reaction was to feel neutral about our experience, but after thinking back through the entire adventure we all agreed that we had a fun time escaping from Blackbeard’s Brig. We’d recommend this escape room for all ages and levels of play.

Final Verdict:

7.2/10
