Breakout KC is near my home, and was one of my first escape room experiences, so when I heard they had opened some new rooms, I was eager to have the team give them a try. The Hero is located in the basement of Breakout, and that added to the general creepiness of the experience. I will say, I have never been as freaked out in an escape room; not that the theme was that scary, but, well… you’ll just have to experience the room to fully understand.
As always at Breakout, an intro video explains the story to the team members and then you are off and running. This ensures the rules and explanation are consistent for every group. Our team thought the video was creative, but we were a little confused by the story, and weren’t exactly sure of our purpose.
The feel, smell and look of the room were perfect. In fact, it was so well-designed that some of us started to panic — everything felt a little too real. Then we saw some four-digit locks, and we realized our own safety and began our adventure.
The Hero room has a variety of puzzles — physical, mental, verbal, and visual. Our team certainly had to use all our skills to be successful. We would have preferred fewer four digit code locks, but they didn’t detract from the fun.
Our team loved the physical challenges, even when they were tough and frustrating. There is something fun about having to use something beyond your mind in these situations. The story seemed to break down in the end (or maybe we were too nervous at the beginning to fully grasp it) but that didn’t stop us from having a good time.
I hope you decide to check out The Hero at Breakout KC. And if you find yourself a little nervous in this room, tell me; we can laugh about it together sometime!
