FOR MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY – Not for the faint of heart!

Plenty of rooms offer the Horror Movie Experience, but there is simply nothing out there like Zoe. Located near downtown Fullerton, where parking is ample and free, Escapade has created a brainchild unlike any other. Somewhere between an escape room, a theme park maze and interactive theater, this room will leave you drenched in sweat and heart pounding. Escapade Games has created a fully sensory experience, loaded with terrifying surprises, stellar actors and a bone-chilling finale. On top of a compelling and simple story, Zoe’s creative innovations are a great sign for the future of escape rooms.

The story, as you know it: After being haunted by nightmares of an abandoned house, you finally get up the nerve to go investigate. When the door locks behind you, the evil poltergeist Zoe is in charge. She wants freedom from the house she is bound to, and she needs you to find the object holding her soul and run far away. Unfortunately for you, there is someone else who is very… insistent on keeping the dark entity tied to the house.

There is so much attention to the fine details in this room. From the high quality props and set, and the technology used in the room to even pre-recording polite responses should one be needed in the room. They have definitely thought this room through, and it is one of the best in terms of high production value!

The puzzles are engaging and tie perfectly into a linear story. To the overall benefit of the experience, this room is NOT a wall-to-wall puzzler. Each room of the house has around 2-3 puzzles in it, the real challenge is keeping sane enough to move forward. Fewer puzzles also allow time for you to fully immerse yourself in the story moments, allowing moments of panic as you make crucial decisions of who to push first into the next room. There will be no asking for clues in this room, but do not fret! The room has it’s own way of providing help when you’re stuck.

Our playing group was larger than recommended; we played with a total of 7 bodies. This led to a few chaotic moments of pushing each other out of the way in fear, and one of us got a little hurt so it’s good to be mindful of the space and people around you. This room is perfect for the recommended 1-6 players. The fewer people you have, the more terrifying it will be. And yes, you can absolutely play solo if you want the true horror challenge. Something to note: this room has a few actors in it. Be aware that on your waiver, you give permission for the actors to physically interact with you. However, if you are touched by an actor, it will be very minor and not aggressive.

Overall, this is the most terrifying escape rooms any of us have ever played. While more puzzles would be nice, it’s hard to focus on solving puzzles when your adrenaline shuts off your brain. But the immersion, the owners, the overall experience in general was great! The waiting room was dark and foreboding, much like the actual experience itself. There is a chest in which you can keep your belongings safe while you’re in the room, and afterwards you can take a picture which will be posted to Instagram. They also let you write a message on the walls to the next victims who make their way through.

We are very impressed with what Escapade is doing, and how innovative they are in this space. They are also in development on a prequel room, which promises a less stressful but more gruesome story. We cannot recommend this room highly enough, but maybe that’s not us talking now… maybe it’s Zoe who has come home with us because her spirit lives on in us… and she is beckoning you to join her…

Final Verdict:

9.5/10
