Located in the eastern suburbs of Toronto is Scarborough’s newest escape room company, Escape Revolution. We were first introduced to the Escape Revo team a few months ago when we were invited to try their first room, Lockdown. It was a nice change of pace from other escape rooms we had played. We enjoyed how the room relied heavily upon creative puzzle solving, teambuilding, and physical challenges as you navigated your way through the scenario. We walked away from the experience with a sense of optimism for the direction of escape rooms in Toronto. So when we were invited back to try their second scenario A.I.’s Martyrdom, we couldn’t wait to get back to the fun!

Escape Revolution’s entrance is at the side of a retail plaza so it’s a bit difficult to find, but there’s a good amount of parking and signs to guide you. Once inside, we immediately noticed an improvement in the lobby from our previous visit. More seats, tables, interactive set designs, a few board games, refreshments, and even lockers that have charging stations for your phones while you’re playing the game! There are still a few finishing touches that need to happen, but again we could see the vast improvement from our previous visit. Our team felt the introductory video and pre-story could use a bit more work, but again, it was decent enough to keep us excited and looking forward to the room itself.

A.I. Martyrdom’s room quality can be summed easily in one word… excellent! All the physical materials were solid, and the set design was well constructed. A good blend of digital and mechanical tech integrated in the design of this room set it apart from most others in Toronto. All props and interactive pieces were also high quality and made us feel every attention to detail was given during construction of this escape room.

The immersion not only keeps up with the room quality… one could argue it surpasses it! Naturally the high quality of props and set design helps in this fashion, but it’s more than that. The puzzles are integrated into the story, the lighting and sounds are exactly what you’d expect, and the atmosphere keeps you invested in every moment within the game. Unlike many (dare we say most?) escape room companies who still paste theme and story on top of their escape rooms, A.I.’s Martyrdom has integrated pieces of visual and audio information you NEED to observe, think about, and ultimately use in order to successfully complete the mission without being told the ending of the story during the intro. That’s good immersion!

And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, we turn our attention towards what Escape Revolution does best… puzzles and creative team building tasks. It’s these aspects of their escape rooms which make Escape Revolution different from any other company in Toronto. Ask yourself, what if each obstacle you faced had several different ways of creatively solving it? What if your team’s ability of working together decided the outcome? Do you have a locked door stopping you from progressing? In any other escape room you’d need to keep looking for the key… but at Escape Revolution, you find your own creative way to pass the obstacle! A.I.’s Martyrdom is a series of challenges that has this type of creativity and careful planning. Their hint system of using a walkie-talkie to contact mission command also adds a bit more to the puzzles and challenges. The only issue we had with the puzzles is there were too many challenging tasks to complete in the time allotted (or maybe it was just us?) Either way, it’s definitely going to keep you working together at all times… so move fast!

And yes, this room is FUN! Bring your friends, experienced and inexperienced escape room players. Bring your family, young children and grandparents also (just be sure they’re aware and able to participate in some moderate physical tasks). And yes, enthusiasts can also come out and enjoy something different. This room really is fun for everyone and we can’t recommend it enough… Now we’re just waiting for Escape Revo’s next room to come out!

We want to hear your thoughts! Be sure to comment in the section below or send us a message via ERA’s email, Facebook, or Twitter… As always, happy escaping!
