This was a great experience for the ERA team. Rather than playing an in-home escape game, or an escape room, this experience was a series of puzzles that took you through the streets of downtown Vancouver. Observation, team work and deduction skills were the key to success!

The start location was easy to find and navigate to. There was no parking lot; however, there is great transportation to get to downtown Vancouver. When we arrived, we were met with an Inspector who was friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to get our team started! We received a sanitized pouch with various items, a map, and a scorecard to record our answers.

In terms of components, the unique aspect of this experience is that the city is your most important component! As you navigate from puzzle to puzzle, you are required to interact and explore different streets, buildings, and monuments to guide the puzzle solving experience and story. This was a great way to see the city and to learn about its history. The pouch of items was useful, however was at times clunky to carry and dig through to find what we needed. We found that some of the quality of the paper items could be refined. There was a lot of paper for us to sift through. The scorecard was a great motivator and helped us to stay organized. Aside from the city exploration, the components were very similar to those you find with most in-home game experiences.

There was an engaging story line for us to follow as we were trying to deduce who was the killer in the story. The solutions to the puzzles helped you to make deductions for the story’s solution, in either a linear or non-linear fashion based on how your team worked together. The instruction booklet for every puzzle helped us to remain engaged, while providing information about the city of Vancouver too.

The puzzles were fun to complete, and the team really liked the puzzles that made you study the architecture and history around you to arrive at the solution. There were some puzzles that had to be completed with your full attention, so it was tough to find some spots to sit down and work together to sift through the paper and items in our inventory bag. There was a variety of puzzles and we appreciated the logic puzzles with this experience too, especially when it came time for our team to decide whodunit!

Overall, this was a super unique experience and one of the highlights of the ERA team’s visit to Vancouver. This experience was great for a small group. One key point we found is that this experience is completely weather dependent. Vancouver mysteries offers another outdoor experience (Secret Mission) that we did. By nature of the experience they offer, we found both experiences to be similar, but very enjoyable and fun to complete! We would have loved to have had more than the two-hour time frame, so we could have taken the time to slow down and really enjoy all the sites we were seeing – but this just makes us want to come back to Vancouver again to explore some more!
