Creepy dolls, eerie soundtracks and surprising mechanics will make you feel like you stepped off of Chesswood Drive and into an abandoned house that will remind you of your childhood nightmares.
The staff at the Vertigo Games were incredibly friendly and welcoming and were quick to offer water and stories about the vision for their company. The waiting area was spacious, however aside from a table-hockey table there wasn’t a whole lot to keep you occupied on the (very low) seats and tables while you waited. I also felt that the pre-room story and set-up were a bit lacking; the room was meant to be a Haunted House, and with a spookier story (perhaps acted out or played on a video, instead of quickly read) the experience could’ve been A+ from start to finish.
This room is absolutely the shining star of the Vertigo Games. It is elegantly furnished to feel like an old haunted mansion (with old furniture from the Fairmont Royal York – which was a neat fact to learn!). They used their props to effectively create a very creepy and unsettling backdrop for their haunted story. The mechanics in this room were crafty and surprising, and there are many clever, little effects that just might make you jump.
The immersion in this room was excellent. They did a great job of linking the spooky story, the technical and physical elements in the room, and the clues for an all-around integrated experience. This room is probably the only one in the building where I believed the story and I felt the pressure to get out. The sophisticated use of sound, mechanics and props made this possible.
The puzzles in this room were simple, but had a logical progression. They offered opportunities for multiple people on the team to do tasks and find clues without a bottleneck, unlike the other rooms offered at the location. They also used their skills in technology to make sure that the puzzles were varied and unique, and not reliant on combination or key locks.
This room was a spooky good time, and a perfect fit for someone who likes a scary ambiance with their logic.
