Mission Alert! Mission Alert! Will you fail shamelessly or be the galactic savior? Use your wits, resourcefulness and most importantly… teamwork to tackle this challenging room at Countdown Live Escape Games in Downtown L.A. Located in a building on the corner of S. Figueroa St and W 23rd St, Countdown Live isn’t too hard to find and the parking lot in the back makes it that much more convenient for people not too familiar with LA and those weird street parking restrictions. There’s a decent waiting room and clean restroom (only one) when you check in and the hostess did a great job explaining the rules and setting up the story for the room.

The sense of urgency and the importance of the task at hand one felt upon entering the room (or space ship) could be felt with the remarkably high tech within the room. The blue lights, lasers, the props and room design made all of us feel like we were shipped off into the stars and placed in some amazing science fiction story.

Like the Krampus room, this room had varying degrees of puzzles, including a lot of difficult tactile ones, some clues that led from one room to another and back again, and a few red herrings here and there. We also had to remember not to shut any doors inside the ship or we would literally be locked in… like, for real. The props were a bit misleading at times in that there were multiple instances where we questioned whether we could disconnect certain cables so be warned about that. During our escape, one of the gadgets had some technical defects, which our host graciously helped us with, and even played the part by entering the room as a “tech support” in a space suit which we thought added to the immersion aspect of the room overall. What was also immersive was the alien on our monitors. I really felt like this could fit in with the Star Wars franchise or some other alien science fiction realm. I absolutely loved how different this room was and it stands out in my mind as one of the more beautiful and technologically advanced out here in LA.

This room was one of the most challenging rooms I’ve ever faced as an escape addict. Some of the solutions for the puzzles were a bit of a stretch so remember to think “outside the box” when going through the room. Our group needed about another 30 minutes to get out. In conclusion, this is definitely not a room for beginners but escape veterans will gladly welcome this challenge with a 13% escape rate.

Overall, Countdown has a great sense of room design, story-building, and a variety of puzzles that make for an immersive experience. They have everything I look for in escape rooms, and I can’t wait for them to build their next one.
