Electric Chair

Mastermind, located in St. Charles, Missouri, was easy to find and had plenty of parking. Upon entering, there were lockers for our belongings, books, games and puzzles to do, and lots of comfy seating. In addition, the staff member working was quite friendly and personable. We were taken to a separate area to complete our briefing, where we watched a video to learn the rules of the escape room, and then we were told the backstory for The Electric Chair.
Upon entering the first area, it looked like a viewing room for an electrocution. Once we did see the electric chair, we had hoped it would look a bit more realistic (even by adding a headpiece). The quality of the furniture and props in the room were okay, but we were hoping to see something more realistic and with less wear and tear. In addition, unfortunately, we had a broken flashlight that needed to be replaced partway through the game, and that pulled our group out of immersion. We were quite immersed at the beginning of the game, but that feeling of immersion faded as we played.
The puzzle design was decent, with a puzzle we’ve not run into before (always a plus!), but was very lock-heavy. There was one puzzle we were really excited about because it was such a fresh idea, but then we realized it wasn’t used in that way which was a bit of a letdown. In addition, there was a clue in there that was incorrect, but an easy fix, so hopefully that will be changed when you go there. We did enjoy working on the puzzles and making our way through the room, with some minor changes I think this puzzle design would be even better.
Overall, our group had fun in the beginning of the room. We definitely enjoyed one surprise aspect that we don’t want to give away! While we didn’t find ourselves frustrated or upset during the room, we also did not feel overly excited while playing. It was a decent room and we can see it being good for newer players to learn the mechanisms of physical locks and how an escape room works.
