As reviewers and consultants, the ERA team members are always hoping to experience something new, interesting, or unique for us to talk about. So when we were invited to test Heroes Unleashed (a two hour facility wide event) at Decode Adventures, we couldn’t wait!

Did the experience live up to the hype? Sadly not as much as we hoped. Let’s start with the positives however… I really enjoyed the concept of each team member having a unique ability (or task). I also enjoyed the atmosphere and scenery of this big scale event. The staff should be commended for their effort in making the whole building feel different than just a bunch of escape rooms & hallways that are also used for traditional room bookings. The staff were polite, helpful, and willing to interact with our team each time we were confused about the next task we needed to perform. It was also fun to be placed in a real time adventure quest against other teams. Beyond these things there wasn’t much to get excited about. The puzzles felt disconnected from the theme and didn’t flow well. The story didn’t really hold interest and seemed vague in some parts of the adventure. But most disappointing was discovering the character roles weren’t anything more than a simple (and usually brief) task. When we asked the other teams about their experiences, most responded that the experience felt gimmicky.

Did we have fun? For the most part yes (even with its blemishes), but the real question of course is if we recommend Heroes Unleashed…. If you’re looking for a social mixer or corporate team building event for a group of 15 or more, you may want to try it because of the real time competition against other teams. Otherwise, you’d probably be better off booking one of Decode’s regular escape rooms (I recommend DeTriad).

As always, happy escaping!

Final Verdict:

6/10
