Exit The Room is located in the heart of Essen and easy to reach via public transportation, by car or by bike. The building is easy to spot, but getting inside is a bit tricky: there are two doors, and the right one is where you have to ring the bell while you enter via the left door. If you have solved this first puzzle, you are greeted by the very friendly staff and find yourself in a spacious waiting area that could however offer more seating. All the walls are covered in signatures, because after playing you get to sign your name on one of the walls or even the ceiling.

Playing the Zombie room you have to find an antidote for the zombie virus. You have until dusk to succeed – if you can’t the zombies will come for you and all of humanity is lost. The room fit the theme and the props and decorations were overall in good condition. There was one puzzle though that was a little worn which made it difficult to handle, but not impossible. While playing we could also hear noises from other rooms as well as from the street. Since this was a zombie-themed room we didn’t mind that much, but some people might feel disturbed.

Although the room was set up well, we would have expected more chaos, more blood and maybe some severed body parts. It felt more like being in a bunker than in a zombie apocalypse, but it was nice to have a good reason for the 60 minute time-frame. This room was very beginner friendly and we never felt like we didn’t know what to do next. At times, the room already felt a little crowded with four people, so we wouldn’t recommend going in with more people. The puzzles were relatively easy, but diverse and still fun to solve since there was some nice tech involved too.

Overall, we’d classify this room as a gateway escape room. This room was fun to play and if this is your first, we’re sure you will get hooked. For experienced players, though, this room might be too easy and instead we’d recommend playing The Bomb.

Final Verdict:

6.8/10

I’ve visited the Bomb as well, and if I compare these two rooms, I liked the Zombie even more. I love creepy things, it was a bit like that, but not scary. The riddles were challenging, and the storyline was unique. I was really excited while playing this escape room, and we were so happy about the fact that we could escape in time. Give it a try if you are in the city!!
