Hello… How ’bout that ride in? I guess that’s why they call it Sin City… Ha Ha…

We apologize in advance for our shameless use of quotes from the movie but we couldn’t resist. OK so our Toronto ERA didn’t actually visit Las Vegas, but we did try our hand at the next closest thing! Escape City Buffalo’s newest escape room: The Hangover. This room is Buffalo’s first adults only escape room and only those over the age of 18 are permitted to play this game. That being said, regardless of the room’s adult only context, we promise that we will keep this review appropriate for people of all ages to hopefully enjoy. Also, whether you are a fan of the movie or not, most people are familiar with the legend that is Las Vegas. So in true Vegas fashion we will do our best from revealing any spoilers. After all what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas… right?

First up, the pre-room… Escape City Buffalo can easily be located in the Youngman Plaza just off the I-290. There is good amount of signage that can easily be seen from the road and plenty of parking spots available. Once you step through the front entrance you are greeted by a gracious host and a fairly spacious lobby. The attention to detail and theming that Escape City Buffalo has put into their lobby is very apparent and was definitely a sign of things to come. Everything, including the benches and the storage lockers has been intentionally rusted out. While there were light refreshments available to purchase, we would have liked to see some games or some form of entertainment to enjoy while you wait. Our actual Hangover experience started with us being led to a room where we had the rules explained to us and we were briefed on our scenario. While this was happening, the actual songs used in the movie were being played in the background which certainly brings back some 2009 nostalgia.

In terms of The Hangovers room quality, you may truly be asking yourself “This isn’t the real Caesars Palace, is it?” No, Caesar did not actually live there but the room quality was so incredible that we are sure he wouldn’t have minded. Everything right down to the tiniest detail is carefully thought out and well placed. The room matches Caesars Palace to a T and the condition that it has been left in would make a Fraternity jealous. We even went back to watch the movie following the review and we couldn’t help but be truly amazed with how close the Escape City Buffalo team replicated the one in the film. It truly is hard to go into too much detail about the room without spoiling the awe inspiring moment that we experienced when we first saw it in its entirety so we will just leave it at that. What we can say is that as per usual, the Escape City Buffalo team has spared no expense when it comes to the amount of detail and quality items that are incorporated in the room.

In large part due to the room quality itself, the level of immersion we felt in the room was also quite strong. Again, the insane attention to detail and the overly partied-out room really helped you feel like you were part of the scenario. We really enjoyed the soundtrack and voice acting that we overhead as it featured four familiar, albeit newly named, characters (though we wish the Russian Mobsters were slightly more menacing). Another thing to note is that due to the adult only theme, the room itself is quite gross and vulgar and which could make some feel uncomfortable. Overall, the great voice acting, strong theming, and attention to detail lent to a strong immersive experience.

With such incredible room quality and strong immersion scores you may be wondering how were the puzzles? Well, they were pretty good. Escape City Buffalo has done a great job ensuring that all the puzzles were thematically correct so that nothing felt out of place. The receiving of hints via hotel room phone or on the giant skewed TV was certainly a fun and interactive touch as well. We ended up using it more than we would like to admit as one puzzle in particular was not working properly and stalled us for quite some time. A good portion of the items found in the room are utilized at some point which could feel overwhelming for some given the chaotic nature of the room’s decor. This could also pose a problem as the room itself is not exactly linear and you often receive items much earlier than you will need them. I will touch on this again later, but I cannot stress enough the importance of getting Wolf Pack together as soon as possible so that everyone can enjoy the room in its entirety.

Last, but certainly not least, is the fun factor of the room. Was The Hangover fun? Yes it was fun, though it may not be for everyone. Keep in mind that this is an adult only room so the content and language used is quite vulgar and could be offensive to some. There are quite a few AHH moments throughout which are always a plus. Fans of the series will probably get more out of the experience as there are a ton of not so subtle nods and Easter eggs to enjoy. Again, please take our advice and make sure that everyone is together as early on as possible in the game so that no one misses out on the experience.

The Hangover is another stellar addition to Escape City Buffalo’s already impressive lineup. We would certainly recommend watching the movie prior to doing this room as you will certainly get more out of it. So that being said if you are a fan of the series or are just in to a raunchy night out in Vegas, we recommend you assemble your Wolf Pack, grab your purse, (it’s not a purse it’s a satchel, Indiana Jones wears one!) make sure Carlos has his shades on, and head over to Escape City Buffalo!

Final Verdict:

8.4/10
