Escape Strategy is located in the Chicago suburb of Aurora, Illinois. There was plenty of parking available at the location, and they had a large colorful sign above the door. Upon entering the building, we saw several areas of sit, water and other drinks available to purchase, merchandise to purchase, and a few puzzles to play with while waiting to start a room. The employees checked us in and then briefed us on our adventure.
The next room we began was the Crime Scene Room. In this room, we were detectives trying to find a murder weapon, the killer, and the killers way out of the room. The room itself had a few pieces of furniture and a few pieces of wall décor, but not much beyond that. With a relatively bare room, there were still several red herrings throughout. The items in the room were functional and the locks worked as intended, it was just a bare room with minimal puzzles or tech.
In terms of immersion, this room was decorated to match the theme, however, the theme itself left many questions in our head (e.g., why would the murderer keep the weapon and evidence in the room of the murder, why are we taking all of these things before the cops get here, etc.). This itself made it somewhat hard to be immersed, but we really came out of immersion every time we got stuck on a puzzle.
Speaking of puzzles…we felt like we had information, but no way to connect it and make sense of it. We felt like many of the puzzles should have gone much faster, but we couldn’t understand the logic, connection, or leap between the clues and information we had. There were a variety of types of puzzles, which we enjoyed, as well as several puzzles we could work on at once.
Overall, this room was a bit frustrating. We had higher hopes, but left frustrated by the lack of puzzle flow, many red herrings, and even incorrect instructions in one puzzle. Like the other room we played at this location, The Crime Scene Room is probably best for those who are newer to escape rooms and smaller groups.
