When the incredible people at Thames & Kosmos games let us know they wanted some reviews of their games in the Exit series, we were honoured and giddy at the thought of playing through even more in-home escape games. Would these games enhance the already competitive marketplace for in-home escape games, or would they push people away from the trend? Only way to find out, so in this review we’re going talk about how we went hunting for Sunken Treasure!
After playing through a few of the Exit games already, we decided a slightly different perspective was needed. For this review we invited a guest reviewer and board game enthusiast to join our three Toronto ERA members. We were curious to see if his perspective would be just as positive as ours has been (we even made sure he submitted his feedback and scores before any of us just to make sure we weren’t inadvertently influencing him). Unsurprisingly our opinions were pretty unanimous across the board!
Unfortunately there isn’t much we can add in this review that hasn’t already been said in most of our other reviews of the Exit games. Just like the rest of the series, Sunken Treasure has good quality game components, a card system for puzzles, clues and hints we really enjoy, and best of all, puzzles that really impress us! A decent soundtrack is added and there’s enough of a story developed within Sunken Treasure to make the immersion as good as one could expect. Although the game suggests 1-4 players, we feel it’s best played with 2-3 players so you have enough minds to bounce around ideas, while at the same time not being forced to watch others play due to the linear style of the game.
In the end, Exit: Sunken Treasure with its price point of roughly $15 USD ($20 CDN), is a pretty good investment for those who like to solve puzzles with a small group of friends. Make sure you invite those who enjoy a good adventure, and why not partner it along with your favourite beverages and snacks? You’ll also appreciate the cute little score cards included at the end of the game so you can compare scores with others who’ve played the same Exit game. If there was one caution we’d raise, it’s this… unless you choose to purposely avoid using the game components as designed, this is a one-time play through and you won’t be able to reset the game for others. Aside from that, Sunken Treasure is fun and definitely fits well within the Exit series. More importantly, it’s also added to the number of great options people have when choosing an in-home puzzle escape game for a night in.
