A dash of spooky, a sprinkle of suspense, a heaping teaspoon of humor, and an overdose of an engaging story: Den of the Occult will be the perfect concoction for you if you’re looking for these four ingredients in an escape room. The guys at Escapedom have a sense of humor and a great sense of storytelling, and we thoroughly enjoyed this room. (Or did they just cast a charm spell on us?)

They are located in Westwood, just south of Wilshire near UCLA. Although I don’t usually have much to say in terms of waiting rooms and restrooms, I certainly do about this company’s, as they have among the most memorable of said rooms. They have a very classy waiting area with fine seats and velvet red curtains… People have admittedly assumed the waiting room was the very one from which to escape. As for the restroom, theirs was very “interactive”, like a “Choose Your Own” TP Roll Adventure, with various rolls of toilet paper adorning the walls. You want 1 ply or 2 ply? Rough or soft? Under or over? The choices are plentiful and they’re all yours to decide!… for you are the king of this throne, after all.

Once you sign the waiver, as you usually do, the host sets you up with the scenario of the room: retrieve the crystal and save the world from Maya Conway, a crazy witch who plans to destroy it. As you enter the room, the smell of incense wafts about which gives a more authentic feel as it pulls you into the story. And don’t worry; the room isn’t as spooky as we had thought it would be. Although the room lacks a soundtrack and a few puzzles seem slightly out of place, there is a nice blend of solving traditional lock boxes and solving puzzles with other means of technology. (There are some very swanky uses of technology which adhere very well to the theme of the room. No spoilers!) And one quick tip: Always check everything! Clues can be hidden in the most obvious of places.

We rate this as an intermediate level for difficulty, great for newbies and veterans alike. If you have a love for cute critters like sloths and witchcraft like Harry Potter, then this is the perfect witch’s brew for you. It will definitely cast a spell on you as one of the most memorable and fun escape room experiences here in LA.

Final Verdict:

8.1/10
