The escape room company House of Tales is located in Berlin Mitte near Checkpoint Charlie and is therefore easy to reach and to find. There is a spacious foyer with a seating area that is decorated with posters/artwork for every escape room this company offers. The staff was very friendly and helpful as well and every group can lock their belongings in a wooden crate.

“One Night in Hong Kong” takes you into the back streets of the Walled City. Your task is to break into a night club to search for your missing triad member Wen Dee along with a large amount of triad money that he had on him when he went missing. The game master assumes the role of one of your accomplices who keeps watch and also can provide you with hints which makes it feel very natural. You can communicate with the game master through a cell phone which adds to the immersion, but at times also separates the player who is on the phone from the rest of the group, since only one person can talk on the phone. All of this provides a great background story that gives a good reason for the time limit as well as for being there.

The room is very well decorated and mostly uses high quality components that all fit the theme of the room. The lights are dimmed and there is background music which make for a very believable atmosphere. At times our team experienced the setting as too dark though and it was kind of hard to see what needed to be done in order to solve the puzzles.

The puzzles provided in this room are very diverse in style and difficulty and also well-embedded in the background story. Locks are only used where it makes sense and all the puzzles are relatable. However, the puzzles are in parts kind of linear and do not require a lot of people to work on.

Since this room takes place in a night club setting, please note that you will encounter explicit content in this room.

Overall, we’ve enjoyed our search across the streets of the Walled City very much. This room might get a little crowded with more than four players, but the story of this escape room as well as the atmosphere are really compelling. It was fun to break in for once rather than break out, like in most other escape rooms . We would very much recommend this room for players who like a well-themed room.

Final Verdict:

8/10
