Breakout KC is one of our favorite escape room companies due to their consistently high quality rooms and superior creativity. Civil War at their Leawood, KS location is no exception. Housed in a relatively new building, the location is safe, well-lit, and has plenty of free parking. While the lobby is unimpressive with some wasted space, the staff could not be more inviting. They are excited about what they do, and they provide a great setup and introduction to their rooms. Be sure to check out their website for discount codes.

Walking into the room, we were welcomed by canteens, old faded photographs, lanterns, and maps which helped set the scene. Working our way through the room, we discovered more Civil War-era items such as tiny military figurines, leather-bound books, and ammunition boxes. The room is subtly tech-heavy, though most of that tech is cleverly hidden within the furniture pieces and walls. While the props and 19th century moving pieces helped create a specific time and place, some of the puzzles were anachronistic. They didn’t completely take us out of the room, but they were noticeable.

The puzzles were of the variety and creativity that we’ve come to expect from Breakout rooms. Teamwork was essential for several puzzles, and the room started with a linear progression that quickly split into multiple areas. The room included high tech elements, manual labor, and thinking outside the box. We used every part of our brains for this one. We recommend no more than six team members for this room, though it can absolutely be completed with four. We do want to note that at least one team member will be required to crawl.

While we did have a ton of fun in this room, there were a few moments of downtime for several members of our team. Due to how the room is constructed, some team members missed out on aspects of the experience. The suspense was present throughout, though, and there is a fabulous on-theme final exit. Teamwork is our favorite part of a room, and this one required a lot of that which made us happy. We also set a record, which is always a good time.

Civil War is a solid room from a great company. We recommend Breakout KC for any group, and this room is another winner.

Final Verdict:

7.6/10
